A wetsuit is an essential piece of gear for surfers, divers, and anyone who loves spending time in the water. But even the best suit can suffer from wear and tear — a small tear in the neoprene, a leaky zipper, or a loose seam. The good news is that many of these issues can be fixed at home with a few simple tools. Here’s a practical guide to help you repair your wetsuit yourself and extend its life.

Check the Damage – and Decide if It’s a DIY Job

Before you start, take a close look at the damage. Small cuts, holes, or loose stitching are usually easy to fix on your own. However, if the neoprene is cracked along the seams, the zipper is broken, or the material has become stiff and brittle, it’s best to take it to a professional repair shop.

Inspect your wetsuit regularly, especially after surfing over reefs or rocky areas, or after traveling. The sooner you spot a problem, the easier it is to repair.

Repairing Small Tears and Holes

Most small neoprene tears can be fixed with neoprene cement, which you can find at surf shops, dive stores, or online. Here’s how:

  1. Clean the area – Rinse the wetsuit with fresh water and let it dry completely. Remove any sand, salt, or dirt around the tear.
  2. Apply the cement – Brush a thin layer of neoprene cement on both sides of the tear. Let it dry for a few minutes until it becomes tacky.
  3. Press together – Carefully align the edges and press them together firmly for a few minutes.
  4. Let it cure – Lay the wetsuit flat and allow it to cure for at least 12 hours before using it again.

If the hole is larger than about an inch, reinforce the repair with a small patch of neoprene glued over the tear.

Fixing Seams and Edges

Seams and edges take a lot of stress, especially around wrists, ankles, and the neck. If the stitching starts to come loose, you can use a combination of neoprene cement and thread made for wetsuits.

  • Stitch first – Sew the tear with small, tight stitches using a curved needle and strong nylon or polyester thread.
  • Seal afterward – Brush a thin layer of neoprene cement over the seam to make it watertight and more durable.

Avoid using regular sewing thread — it can rust or break down in saltwater.

Zippers and Cuffs

A sticky zipper or a torn cuff can quickly ruin a session in the water. Fortunately, a little maintenance goes a long way:

  • Lubricate the zipper regularly with silicone grease or zipper wax to keep it moving smoothly and prevent corrosion.
  • Inspect cuffs and seals for small cracks. Minor damage can be glued, but if the material feels brittle or stretched out, it’s time for a replacement.

Prevention: How to Avoid Future Damage

The best repair is the one you never have to make. With a few simple habits, you can keep your wetsuit in great shape for years:

  • Always rinse with fresh water after each use — salt, sand, and chlorine degrade neoprene.
  • Dry in the shade, never in direct sunlight, since UV rays can make neoprene brittle.
  • Hang on a wide hanger to prevent creases and maintain the suit’s shape.
  • Be gentle with zippers and cuffs, especially when the suit is wet.

When to Seek Professional Help

While many small repairs can be done at home, some problems require expert attention. If your wetsuit leaks in multiple places, the zipper is broken, or the seams are separating, a professional repair service can restore it to near-new condition.

Many surf and dive shops in the U.S. offer wetsuit repair services at reasonable prices — and they can also give you advice on how to care for your suit properly.

A Small Effort with Big Rewards

Fixing your own wetsuit is satisfying, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. With a bit of patience and the right materials, you can extend your suit’s life for many more sessions in the water — and keep it out of the landfill.

So next time you notice a small tear, grab the neoprene cement instead of tossing the suit. A few minutes of work can save you money and keep you ready for your next wave or dive.
